No Excuses!

You can't say "I don't know where to vote!"
Go here, or here, right now and find out. Or just google "where do I vote". Seriously, it's that easy.
And don't worry about the predicted long lines - we're knitters after all! Bringing along a project will make the time fly by.
Even if you are not in a swing state, please remember just how important your vote is. There are local races and ballot questions in your state that are critical and you'll be casting a vote in an historic election.
If you have problems at the polling place call
1-866-MYVOTE1 (866-698-6831) or
1-888-VE-Y-VOTA (en Español).
Go vote!
Some More Crafting for Obama
Submitted by spoons on Sun, 11/02/2008 - 4:21pm.
Have you checked out The Obama Craft Project yet? If not, go quickly!
Some teasers (each image links to the project entry):
Also via The Obama Craft Project, head on over here to download a free intarsia Obama sweater pattern. And get knitting! You'll need something to do with your hands whie watching the returns come in.
Education Debate
Submitted by spoons on Mon, 10/20/2008 - 8:09pm.
Education didn't get much attention in the presidential debates, but it will get 100% of the attention in tomorrow night's debate between the candidates' educational advisors.
If you are interested in hearing more about each candidate's educational platform, the debate will be webcast by Education Week at 7pm. You can register here to watch it live. There will be a video archive available on Wednesday.
Know your candidates and their plans for taking care of our future leaders!
Free Vote Poster

One of my favorite artists, Nikki McClure, is giving away a poster of her Vote! image through the, also wonderful, buyolympia.com.
Remind everyone of the power of making our voices heard in November. Click on the picture above to get one for yourself and display it for all to see.
Eco-Knitting
Submitted by spoons on Mon, 09/15/2008 - 9:44pm.
Want to combine your liberal tree-hugging with your knitting? Shannon Okey says you can. Her new book is a guide to using alternative fibers:
From the book description:
From the seaweed-derived Seacell yarn, which transmits vitamins and
nutrients to the skin when worn, to soy-based yarns made from tofu
manufacturing waste, alternative fibers are readily available, easy to
care for, and good for the environment. And because these fibers work
up, drape, and wear like no other yarns, Okey teaches crafters of all
skill levels about each fiber's properties, how to incorporate them
into existing patterns, and how to hand-dye them. Knitting green has
never been so easy.
I haven't read this book cover to cover yet. Does anyone know if the yarns featured are sustainably produced in addition to being sustainable fibers?
Also in the green-crafting vein, I recently heard about a blog authored by a group of craft-blogging friends. And, since I obviously love a good group blog, I thought I'd pass it along. Sew Green is concerned with consumerism, activism and other ways to be crafty for good. Go check it out!

It's a Joke in a Commercial Now
Submitted by spoons on Mon, 08/25/2008 - 9:15pm.
Has anyone seen the newest Maytag commercial that is airing? I can't find it anywhere on the web yet, so I can't link it. But if you watch the clip below, Lou Dobbs shows you some of the commercial (if you are getting an error from CNN's new video service here is a direct link):
The commercial ends with the Maytag Repair Man showing the voters the problem - paper ballots with lots of hanging chads were clogging the machine. He then says "Gotta go. Busy day."
Is this "ha ha" funny? Isn't this issue a bigger concern than can/should be relegated to a pop culture wink? Especially since it doesn't seem to be getting any closer to being solved. When I saw this commercial it really irritated me. Am I overreacting?
